PHILIPPIANS

What influence does archeology have on our understanding of Paul's letter to the Philippians? Also the influence of the recent battles at Philippi before Christ's birth and Paul's arrival.

What influence does scholarly questions have on layperson faith? or What is the relationship between understanding who Paul is and having or growing in faith in Christ? (do these things matter to Jane in the pew: 1 letter or 2/3 letters compiled, authorship, where Paul is writing from. What questions matter to Jane in the pew. While I am interested in these questions, much of it seems to be more about a pursuit of understanding Paul than a pursuit of faith in Christ.)

Rhetorical question--is love and joy a short commodity in Philippi? Granted I did not see much, but many seem to accept Paul's love for the Philippians at face value. Often Paul writes letters to instruct and address conflict. How does a reading that views Philippi as a community that has lost a sense of love and joy in the midst of suffering change the impact of the letter? Does this reading hold water?

The distinction between suffering and suffering for Christ. Is this a lost distinction in our congregations?
