PHILIPPIANS

JohnP

A question?

How do you limit a search to pick up sites that relate to your topic without getting the other stuff—Philippi, West Virginia; Philippi family genealogy; et. al.?.

Some sites that interested me

Craig Koester at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN offers a website on Paul’s journeys at http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Paul/journey2/Philippi.htm. One of the city sites is Philippi and features some good photos of the excavated archeological ruins along with short explanations. Probably good for a confirmation class or adult bible study.

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture http://www.culture.gr/2/21/211/21118a/e211ra01.html summary of excavations and restorations at Philippi with good thumbnail pictures.

Bible Places.com http://www.bibleplaces.com/philippi.htm of a Roman public toilet which it relates to Philippians 3:18 “Public bathrooms were not uncommon in ancient Roman cities, but this one is a good illustration for Paul's reference to scubalon, or human waste.  In his letter to the Philippians, Paul wrote "I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ" (3:8 NIV).

The Encyclopedia Britannica article was rather dull. http://www.britannica.com/ebc/article?eu=400427
