"New Testament Apocrypha" or
- New
Testament Apocrypha
- Optional: Try reading "The
Gospel of Nicodemus" part 2, "The Descent of Christ into
Hell." (11 'chapters' long - Another slightly different version
HERE.
Both texts are available in BibleWorks. Use
Resources>Backgrounds>James, The NT Apocrypha > and then
go to page 117. Another translation is available in BW as a version:
Type HON in the command line; then GNi 1.1)
The basic premise is that Joseph of Arimathea is defending the
resurrection of Jesus and reflects the notice in Matthew
27.52f that a number of saints arose at Jesus' crucifixion.
("The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had
fallen asleep were raised. After his resurrection they came out of the
tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many.") Joseph has
the Jewish authorities find some of these saints who are living in
Arimathea and question them regarding their experience. (BTW, HERE
is a sermon I did long ago that was partially inspired by this text.)
