April 24-25: Spring Convocation - NO CLASS

• For anyone who is interested, I would be willing to meet over lunch time at the Refectory.
• At 1:30 on Tuesday, attend: “The World of the Bible: Excavating Texts and Contexts” by the Rev. Dr. Marty Stevens
• Advanced Greek – Spring 2007 – Final Exam: Take-Home Portion (and in PDF): This is due at class time on May 1. Take a maximum of 2 hours to complete the test. You may use any non-human resource. 
  • NOTE: For #1, you should consider what literal/dynamic English translations you might use as starting points. (Ie, I am not expecting that you start from scratch...)
  • #2 is translation, but be sure to use software/books. It's fairly standard gospel-level difficulty (ie, not very difficult... It's not Hebrews or Philo!)
  • #3 will require you to look at stuff in Wallace.
  • #4 is basically BibleWorks/Logos work.

  • How do the various versions handle the two instances of εκ πιστεως in verse 17?
  • How is inclusive language handled in the versions?
  • The quote from Habakkuk 2.4 has three elements: 1) ο δικαιος 2) εκ πιστεως 3) ζησεται - In what order are these elements translated, and what difference does it make? (While you are at it, also pay attention to how the tense of ζησεται is handled.) What factors should be considered in composing the 'best' translation?

• Translation: Mark 3.1-6 & Matt 12.9-14 & Lk 6.6-11 - Pay particular attention to differences in style of Greek. You are not asked to translate all these texts. Rather, figure out how to create a table for comparing the texts, note the differences between them, try to discern the sentence structures, and be ready to discuss your findings.
