Spring 2004
ADVANCED GREEK - Independent Study
Class meets Thursdays, 10:25-11:40 in Valentine 340
For 5/6
- VanVoorst Vocab: Work through IV.A-E (pages 68-71)
- Read Hebrews 1.1-4; 1 Peter 1.1-12; Revelation 22.6-21 (If time is
limited: Hebrews 1.1-4; 1 Peter 1.1-5; Revelation 22.16-21)
- Translation Quiz (This is not something for which you can study. You will
be asked to translate two brief [a verse or two] passages--one from Mark and
one other.)
- Index of -greeklatinaudio-greek-mark
- We have been learning the Erasmian Greek pronunciation which is a completely
artificial system. Based on linguistic research (e.g., noting the spelling
confusions as we saw in looking at Codex W) the file at this site are spoken
much more as they might have been in the 1st century CE. For 1 John files and
a description of the pronunciation system go to:
Biblical Language Center.
- TEXTKIT - Greek and Latin Learning Tools
(Go HERE for my suggestions)
For 4/29
- Read Philippians 1 (Try to get through verse 26)
- VanVoorst Vocab: Work through IIID.5-8 (pages 37-41), words used 10 or more
times
- I also hope to have us look at Mark 16.9-20, and we will want to check it
out in Codex
Washingtonianus.
For 4/22
- NOTE: NO VOCAB QUIZ
- Read Mark 9
- Since we had such fun with Codex W (that is, our poor substitute for the
real thing), we decided to continue on with verses 4-8 of Mark 1. Try to
transcribe using the sheets I provided, especially looking for variants from
the Nestle-Aland text. Also, more fun with
The Eusebian Canons
For 4/15
- In class on Thursday, we will discuss whether we want to spend some time
on Codex Washingtonianus, culminating with a field trip to the Freer/Sackler
Gallery in D.C. to see the actual mss. Interested? For now, check out: Codex Washingtonianus
Introduction and then go on to: Gospel Of
Mark images.
UPDATE: I just found out that as of 2 months ago, Codex Washingtonianus has
been completely withdrawn and is no longer available for viewing. Do you still
want to work on it? Read the Introduction (don't bother with the discussion of
the cover art), then click on the Gospel of Mark
images link in the previous paragraph, and then go
to Mark 1.1-8. Then use Mark 1.1-8
Transcribe.pdf to help you transcribe it.

- VanVoorst Vocab: Work through IIID.1-4 (pages 32-37), words used 10 or more
times
