TOPICS (tentative and partial listing)

From the syllabus:  Topic Presentation: Students will select a topic that will become the focus of their work from the list provided or in consultation with the instructor. Presentations on the preliminary work accomplished will be scheduled for Thursday or Friday. The best presentations will help the other members of the class understand the issues involved with your text or topic and the preliminary ways you are working with it. The presenter should keep in mind that a final paper will yet be written on this topic, and so feedback should be solicited that will contribute to that paper. Depending on the number of students in the course, these presentations will be 20-30 minutes long.

There are a few ways you can approach your choice of a topic. The first two ways are preferable and probably the most manageable for writing a paper.

  1. Start with a New Testament passage. Look in the margin of your NET Bible for an OT reference. Look for bold or italic characters in the Greek or English text of the NET Bible which indicate an OT quotation. Check the TSK in your Bible software. Your paper here will likely be something like: "The Function of (OT passage) in (NT passage)."
  2. Start with an Old Testament passage. Look in the Loci citati vel allegati at the back of the NET Bible starting on page 772. The index is organized by OT passages. Find a passage in which you are interested and note where it is referenced in the NT. Your paper here will likely be something like: "The Function of (OT passage) in the NT."
  3. You may also do a topical study, but this is likely to require much more work because it will entail a much broader field of inquiry. Some possible topics might be (ones marked mgvh are ones I plan to present in class):
