From the syllabus: Topic Presentation: Students will select a topic that will become the focus of their work from the list provided or in consultation with the instructor. Presentations on the preliminary work accomplished will be scheduled in October and November. The best presentations will help the other members of the class understand the issues involved with your text or topic and the preliminary ways you are working with it. The presenter should keep in mind that a final paper will yet be written on this topic, and so feedback should be solicited that will contribute to that paper. Depending on the number of students in the course, these presentations will be 20-30 minutes long.
There are a few ways you can approach your choice of a topic. The first two ways are preferable and probably the most manageable for writing a paper.
- Jesus as Messiah
- Jesus as "Suffering Servant"
- Jesus as Son of David
- Jesus and Isaac: Akedah
- Jesus and Wisdom / Sophia
- Jesus and the "Sign of Jonah"
- Jesus the "Rock" (mgvh)
- The Magnificat: Luke 1.46-55
- Jesus' Inaugural Speech in Luke 4.16-30
- A "Prophet like Moses"
- Elijah, John the Baptist, and Jesus
- Psalm 22 (mgvh)
- Psalm 110
- Psalm 89
- Israel: Romans 10.5-13 and Galatians 3.6-14
- Resurrection: 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18
- Early Christian Preaching
- Acts 2: Peter's Speech at Pentecost
- The prayer of Acts 4.23-31
- Acts 7: Stephen's Speech and the History of Israel
- You are welcome to propose a topic of your own choosing, but it must be approved by the instructor.
